Kinsella Farms is a family run, disabled Veteran owned, indoor Aquaponics Farm located in West Orange, New Jersey. We grow leafy greens and microgreens in a closed loop aquaponics system - soil free, fertilizer free and pesticide free, starting with only the best non-gmo seeds.
Our mission is to provide fresh locally sourced produce to the community in the most sustainable, eco-friendly method possible. Our aquaponics system uses 90% less water than traditional agriculture, and creates a mini ecosystem, mimicking mother nature, but without depleting our precious natural resources.
Where possible we eliminate the use of expendables. We deliver our greens in reusable containers or compostable clam shells, and avoid single use plastic containers.
We grow our microgreens right here in West Orange. They are harvested by hand only hours before they are delivered fresh to your home, or your favorite market or restaurant. You know exactly when your microgreens were harvested, and don't have to wonder how long they sat on a truck or on a shelf. You cannot get fresher Microgreens unless you grow them yourself.
We sell at local farmers markets in Essex County NJ, and offer free home delivery subscriptions anywhere in the local area. To become a home delivery customer, visit our Subscriptions Page.
Microgreens are young plant shoots around 7-20 days old. They are tender and packed with flavor and nutrition. In fact, a 2012 nutritional analysis study by the University of Maryland found that microgreens were 4-40 times more nutrient-dense than their mature counterparts (https://agnr.umd.edu/news/mighty-microgreens). So eating a cup of radish microgreens is similar to eating 30-40 cups of mature radishes, as they were some of the most nutritious in the study.
We grow a variety of Microgreens depending on demand, seed availability, and sometimes just to mix things up. If you have any questions on what is currently growing, drop us a line and we'll let you know.
Aquaponics is a method of growing plants that mimics mother nature. It combines Aquaculture (raising fish) and Hydroponics (growing without soil.)
The fish produce ammonia through their natural digestion process. The water (and ammonia and fish waste) drain into the grow beds where it is filtered by the grow media, and interacts with naturally occurring bacteria which transform the Ammonia into Nitrites, and then the Nitrites into Nitrates.
The plants absorb and are fed by the Nitrates, and the cleaned and filtered water is returned to the fish tanks.
All of this happens in a closed ecosystem. The only element that is added to the system is the fish food, and the only thing removed is the plants. Water never needs to be purged.
Aquaponics uses 90% less water than traditional farming, and grows vegetables twice as fast.
At Kinsella farms, we use ornamental fish, and never harvest our fish for food.
